Cuzco Cuzco
Adventure starts in Cuzco
Begin your adventure in Cuzco, once the geographic, cultural and political centre of a vast Inca empire. After Spanish conquistadors invaded, they built on top of Inca structures, resulting in unique architecture, a fusion of Spanish and Inca styles.
Around 6pm, say hola to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.
Your tour leader then ensures a big Peruvian welcome by arranging dinner.

Free day to acclimatise • Optional adventures in the Sacred Valley
Adjusting to the altitude will maximise your experience on this trip; therefore, today has been left free for you to acclimatise and explore at your own pace. Take it easy and drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the altitude (11,155ft/3,400m).
For those who want to explore, the Plaza de Armas is a fantastic spot for people-watching, and Qorikancha (the Sun Temple) in the Santo Domingo Church and monastery is worth a visit. Mercado San Pedro is the place to try local produce and there are many handicraft markets to shop for souvenirs, such as alpaca jumpers and scarves.
Outside the town are more Inca ruins, notably the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, where the Inca armies made their last stand against the conquistadors. Cuzco is also the gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Incas; if you wish to visit, your leader can help organise an excursion, including Pisac Market (optional).
If you would like something more active, there is an array of other optional activities available from Cuzco, including paddleboarding on a lake, mountain biking, or a combination of via ferrata and zip-lining in the Sacred Valley.
In the evening, you need to pack and weigh your kitbag ready for the Inca Trail tomorrow – remember to keep your passport somewhere accessible for the Inca Trail checkpoint.

Start the Inca Trail trek from Km82 • Walk along the Urubamba River • Climb to Huayllabamba
Early this morning, we transfer (1hr 30min) from Cuzco into the Sacred Valley. Reaching the town of Ollantaytambo, we drive for one hour along the final stretch of road to the start of the Inca Trail at Piscacucho, recognised among adventurers as Km82. After greeting our trekking crew, we show our passports at the checkpoint and begin the fabled Inca Trail trek. Our route today runs alongside the Urubamba River, beneath the snow-capped peak of Nevado Veronica, passing through cactus gardens and settlements, until we reach the terraced Inca ruins of Llactapata, where we continue up the Cusichaca Valley to camp near the village of Huayllabamba (9,186ft/2,800m).

Summit Dead Woman's Pass • Descend to Pacaymayu
The morning begins, as all do on our Inca Trail trek, with a hot drink delivered to your tent. Today’s journey is both challenging and rewarding, marking the most demanding and best-known stretch of the trail. A slow and steady climb takes us through a cloud forest to the meadows of Llulluchapampa, then we summit Dead Woman’s (Warmihuañusca) Pass, the highest point on the trek at 13,829ft (4,215m). After a well-deserved round of high fives and photos at the summit, we begin our steep descent on original Inca steps to reach our campsite in the scenic valley of the Pacaymayu River (11,811ft/3,600m). Warm up in the dining tent with a hot, fresh meal followed by a well-deserved sleep under the Andean night sky.

Over the Runquracay Pass to the ruins of Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca
After a hearty breakfast, we start the day with a climb, which takes us past the ruins of Runquracay and over the Runquracay Pass (12,894ft/3,930m), our second and final pass. From here, the Inca Trail becomes a clearly defined rolling path of flat boulders, providing access to sites only available to those on foot. One of the standout archeological sites we visit is Sayacmarca (11,893/3,625m), perched high above the green cloud forest. From here, we enjoy views of Salkantay mountain as we hike to our spectacular campsite on the ridge above the Inca site of Phuyupatamarca (12,073ft/3,680m), where we can enjoy the sunset and sunrise.

Walk down the Inca Steps to Wiñay Wayna • Enjoy our first sight of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate
From Phuyupatamarca, we take the famous Inca Steps: a 1.2mi (2km) stone staircase that rapidly descends into an immense panorama, with the peaks of the Vilcabamba range above and the Urubamba River far below.
Reaching Wiñay Wayna, we have plenty of time to explore these beautiful ruins and eat lunch before continuing along a relatively flat section of trail (by Inca standards) through cloud forest and wild orchids to finally reach Inti Punku (the Sun Gate).
From here, we get our first full sight of Machu Picchu, with the Huayna Picchu mountain rising behind… congratulations, you made it!
Inti Punku is traditionally busy with photo-taking trekkers in the morning, so our late afternoon arrival affords us unobstructed views of the magnificent ruins. We also get a chance to snap some classic photos of Machu Picchu before we take the 30-minute bus down to Aguas Calientes for a shower and a comfortable bed for the night.

Explore the ruins of Machu Picchu • Return to Cuzco by train and road
Well-rested and refreshed, we return to Machu Picchu this morning for our guided tour. Machu Picchu is an architectural and engineering marvel, the staggering mountain backdrop making it even more dramatic. The Spaniards never found it, the Incas left no records of it, and so Machu Picchu remained an enigma, a city lost for centuries in the jungle until it was rediscovered in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. Your guided tour highlights the history, culture, architecture and mysteries that Machu Picchu still holds today.
This afternoon, we catch the train back to Ollantaytambo (1hr 30min) and continue by private bus to Cuzco (1hr 30min).

We begin our return journeys home after breakfast. But if you’re not ready for the adventure to end, you can always book onto our Lake Titicaca extension, where you explore the sky-high waters by boat, visit an indigenous community and explore the pre‐Incan site of Sillustani. Alternatively, join our Amazon Rainforest extension to explore lakes, rivers and jungle trails in search of tropical wildlife or speak to your sales representative about additional time in Cuzco.

Post-trip Extensions
Lake Titicaca extension
Journey across the spectacular altiplano to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable freshwater lake in the world at 12,467ft (3,800m). Explore the waters by boat and visit the indigenous Uros community who live on floating reed islands and produce fine textiles. Back on the mainland, we visit the pre‐Inca site of Sillustani, composed of burial towers with fantastic views over the region. The Lake Titicaca extension is only available after your main tour as we do not recommend arriving straight into Puno due to the altitude. The detailed itinerary can be found here.

Hotels and fully supported camping
The three-star hotels selected on our Andean trips feature an excellent blend of quality and comfort, with easy walking access to city and town attractions. The Inca Trail is offered on a full-service camping basis with full porterage, meaning our camp staff put up and take down the tents for you, cook, and do all the camp chores. You need only carry your backpack for the day and enjoy your time on the trek.
Cuzco: MamaSara Hotel (nights 1-2 and 7)
Just a few blocks from the historic centre, MamaSara is well located for our adventures in the one-time Inca capital of Cuzco. The design of the rooms pays homage to the city with locally sourced furniture and artwork, while the restaurant serves Peruvian Andean cuisine.
Inca Trail: Camping (nights 3-5)
We sleep and dine in good-quality four-season tents. We also have a toilet tent set up both in camp and during lunch stops. Boiled and filtered drinking water is provided to guests in the mornings, at lunch and dinner times so we can refill our water bottles. While on the trek, a bowl of warm water for washing is provided each morning and evening. On the Inca Trail, we stay in official campsites where additional bathroom facilities are available.
Aguas Calientes: Terraza de Luna (night 6)
Terraza de Luna is conveniently located in Aguas Calientes near the train station and buses to Machu Picchu. In addition to the standard comforts and warm service, it has a wonderful rooftop terrace with a bar and lounge area to enjoy a drink and take in the views of the mountains and Urubamba River.

I really enjoyed this trip despite suffering from some serious altitude sickness. We had excellent guides and although I’m not known to be the best camper, the team made it as comfortable as it possibly could be and the first views of Machu Picchu from the sun gate made it all worth it!

Wilmer was fantastic. He provided excellent information and kept our spirits high when the trekking was difficult, even carrying my pack for a bit when my altitude sickness was at its worst.
Advice for Potential Travellers
At one point this trek was listed as moderately challenging, but I developed severe altitude sickness and this made the hike to Dead Woman's Pass at >14,000 ft highly challenging. If you know you are sensitive to the altitude talk to your medical provider about medications for altitude sickness and adjunctive medications to help with the symptoms or reconsider this trek all together.

The satisfaction of completing the ascent of Dead Woman's Pass. The night sky and sunrise at every campsite. The meals provided during the whole trek were incredible. How the team could bake a cake at the top of a mountain I still don't know! Excellent food, hearty portions, and catered to very diverse food preferences and allergies. The porters were really made to feel like part of the family and it was lovely to hear their stories, as well as the stories of our local guides.

William was exceptional. His experience, love of the mountains, professionalism and care for both clients and porters was outstanding. He was mentoring assistant guide Luis, who is well on the way to becoming an excellent lead guide. They both had to deal with two medical events on the trek; this was done efficiently, safely and with no impact on the rest of the group. Their local knowledge was so extensive, ranging from local flora and fauna, to culture and history. In particular, William's recollections about his grandmother being a local healer, the love for his mother, and his beliefs in the traditions of the circle of life was both emotional and thought provoking.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Exodus's itinerary is what sets it apart from the other companies. The choice to leave camp 3 later on day 4 of the trek (rather than around 3am like the other companies) so that you can rest in Machu Picchu town before touring Machu Picchu site is what sets this itinerary apart. We couldn't imagine having to do the trek, tour the site, and travel back to Cusco on the same day. Luggage note - This is not an Exodus issue. We flew with Iberia and were told emphatically at Heathrow by their staff that luggage would go all the way through to Cusco (final destination). However, on arrival at Lima (and after leaving the baggage hall) we found out that this information was incorrect. It was a little stressful to retrieve our luggage before the next flight. Our advice would be to check the carousel before leaving the baggage hall to save the stress.
INCREDIBLE TREK!
This was, without a doubt, the best trek I’ve ever done! Starting with two days in Cusco, a city that’s not only beautiful but full of history and culture – I loved having the time to explore, and our guide offered fantastic recommendations for delicious Peruvian meals.
The Inca Trail itself was incredible. Every day brought stunning views, and there were soo many Inca ruins along the way! Day 2 (Dead Womans Pass) was definitely a challenge but so rewarding once reaching the top!
I was surprised by the quality of the camping, it was far better than expected. And the food – wow! The chefs prepared three-course meals that were absolutely delicious, and on the final night, we were treated to fresh-baked cake and mulled wine to celebrate – it exceeded all my expectations!
Overall, the trip was perfectly planned from start to finish. An unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to visit Machu Picchu!

Trip of a lifetime
The whole trip was truly amazing. I did both the Amazon and Lake Titicaca extensions, which logistically was complicated but it was all made easy with Exodus. The most impressive thing was that my luggage made it through a total of 5 airport connections and a 10 hour bus ride!
The Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu was the best yet, hard in places (day 2 getting to dead womans pass) but so worth it. Met a brilliant group of people, only 8 of us which was the perfect size, Best Group Ever 🙂

Although Peru was wonderful, our group leader Wilmer made the trip for me. Do not expect luxury accommodation - it is clean but basic and Peru is a very poor country. Just embrace it.

Whilst this seems expensive, I would say it is worth it. I travelled alone and as I don't speak Spanish, I just wanted a company to take care of everything and ensure I was safe throughout. It was really worth investing in this and worthwhile choosing an ethical company.

I have wanted to do The Inca Trail for about 20 years. I finally took the jump and couldn’t have been happier with my experience. Not only was it a great person accomplishment but it was made to be a very comfortable and fulfill trip by everyone involved before at home and in Peru. Firstly I had a delayed flight between Bogota and Lima, this resulted in me missing the final leg of my journey. I made contact via email while sat on a plane and the staff at home were exceptional, had me on a new flight instantly and rearranged my transfer to the hotel. The city of Cuzco, the country of Peru, I loved it all. The porters on the trek were amazing. The chef was a genius. The camp sites exceptional. The group leader, Julio, full of knowledge. Exodus and everyone associated with my trip have my eternal gratitude

Our tour guide was Julio. He was honestly incredible. He had incredible knowledge and was very passionate about what he does. I travelled alone and he ensured I was part of the group but also allowed me free time when I sought it. He assisted with information before before and after the trek when in and around Cusco.
